Turkey film festival cancelled over ban on Daniel Craig’s gay film Queer

Streaming platform Mubi called off its Mubi Fest Istanbul at the last minute in protest of a local authority’s decision to ban Queer, a drama featuring Daniel Craig. The three-day film festival was to commence on November 7 for the second edition, after a successful first run in 2023.
A loosely translated English version of Mubi Turkiye’s statement read, “As we count down to the start of MUBI Fest Istanbul 2024—an event whose preparations took months, announcements began weeks ago, and tickets sold out days ago—we are saddened to announce that the screening of Queer, the festival’s opening film, has been banned following a notice from the Istanbul District Governor’s Office.”
The statement further read, “According to the decision, the film has been banned on the grounds of containing “provocative content that could endanger public peace,” and this ban will be enforced for security reasons. We believe this decision is an intervention that restricts art and freedom of expression. Festivals are spaces where art and cultural diversity are celebrated and where people come together. This ban not only undermines one film but distances the entire festival from its purpose and meaning.”
The statement continued, “Therefore, as MUBI, we feel it is essential to take a principled stance in line with our audience’s expectations, and we regretfully announce the cancellation of MUBI Fest Istanbul in its entirety. We extend our gratitude to all the artists, audiences, and supporters who planned to participate in the festival and whom we believe share in our disappointment, for their understanding and solidarity. We will continue to uphold our stance on protecting freedom of expression and artistic expression.”
It concluded with, “Further information on ticket refunds will be shared later.”
