Description
You are bidding on a large, very rare original antique print from an 1870s French illustrated journal. It depicts a flat-coated retriever dog retrieving a rabbit hare. Flat-Coat Retrievers are also called Flatcoat,
Flattie
, Flatte, Flattie-Tattie, flatt.
It is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture measures about 7.4 x 8 inches, with a French caption below. There is unrelated text surrounding the print. which could be trimmed for framing.
The French caption reads: Le Grande Epagneul Francais. But I do not believe it to be the French spaniel (which at that time was a mostly white dog with a few black markings). If you think I have the bred wrong, let me know. It is possible it is the breed now described as the Spangneul Bleu de Picardie. But I believe it to be the flat-coated retriever, which was popular all over Europe in the 1870s. Let me know if you think I got the breed ID wrong.
The page is in excellent condition for its age. It has one small brown fox mark in the white margin area below the print (see scan).
There is text/photos on the back of the print.
See scan for an accurate view of the condition.
This is GENUINE antique/vintage item. It is not a modern reproduction.
