Description
Maker: This exquisite and classically elegant chocolate pot is by D & Co. L. Bernardaud, the renowned Limoges firm that has produced exceptional quality porcelain since 1863 and remains a major player in Limoges today.
On the base are the green D & Co France white ware mark number 3 that was in use between 1894 and 1900 and the red L. Bernardaud decorator's mark number 3 that was in use from 1900 until the 1930s. That means this chocolate pot was produced in or around 1900.
The red retailer's mark of Higgins & Seiter, a high-end New York store that closed in 1915, appears on other pieces in this dinner service but not on this chocolate pot.
Design
: The pattern features a thin black Greek key band and gold scrollwork on pure white porcelain. Replacements.com calls this pattern BER6.
Condition
: The pot and its lid are in excellent condition with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, crazing, stains or repairs. There is an embedded black dot near the bottom that was created in the manufacturing process; this was a common occurrence in Limoges porcelain of this era. It's shown in the photo with the penny.
Size
: The pot is 7 1/2 inches tall without the lid, which adds about 2 inches, and 3 3/4 inches wide at the top. The 2 pieces together weigh 1 pound 7 ounces.
Please check all the photos very carefully – they are an important part of the description.
