1986 YAMAHA VMAXVIN # JYA1UT002GA000625
MILEAGE 5825
Yamaha's VMX1200 was the first motorcycle ever to earn the well deserved moniker of “Muscle Bike”.
Truly a revolution in motorcycle design, engineering and execution. Yamaha unleashed these bikes on the public in 1985 and they instantly became the undisputed king of the streets and drag strips worldwide. The 1198cc V Four motor came with "V-Boost"
and the factory was claiming 145 crankshaft horses
making these machines that could burn rubber on command
and reel in sub 10 second quarter mile times with just the slightest bit of skill and desire.
I purchased this low mileage example on April seventeenth 2019 from a 75 year old gentleman who was the second owner having purchased it from the original owner on August first 2009. Originally purchased in Minnesota the first owner sold it with 1200 miles to the gentleman I purchased from in 2019 with 5600 miles.

I brought it home and the first thing I did was take it for a ride of course. That ride revealed several items that needed immediate attention:
1) Steering head bearings adjusted
2) Carbs synced
3) New front tire(OEM)
4) New rear tire(OEM) by previous owner prior to sale
5) Spark Plug replacement
6) Oil (Rotella) and filter (Wix) change
7) Rear brake master cylinder rebuilt
8) Rear brake disc machined/trued
9) Brake fluid replaced front and rear
10) Battery replaced
General deep clean and polish
The work took place between Summer of 2019 and Winter of 2020. Battery was replaced today.
The second owner had it painted as personal preference, the paint was done in "House of Color" Purple Shimrin (still an available color btw)
Overall a super clean and nice example of the first gen VMAX. No mechanical issues to speak of. Runs, rides, stops and starts as it should. The paint overall is very nice however upon close inspection the faux fuel tank cover exhibits paint imperfections (fisheye) and the left side tank badge has some paint chipping/loss. You need to look closely to spot this and it is not present on the fenders.
There is evidence of some flash rust on the gas tank at the filler neck. You can see this in the photos. You can look inside and see the tank is clear. I've installed a Mr Gasket clear fuel filter with serviceable screen in the event any rust made its way into or out of the fuel tank. To date no rust present.
There is a small 3-4m wide 2 mm deep dent on the right rear exhaust can and small minor (3) scratches on the left rear end can. Also a small tear 10mm on the inside of the seat where it lifts to access the fuel tank. These imperfections are only noticeable when viewed through a fine tooth comb but I didn't want any surprises for the new owner.
The bike has been serviced by its owners over its life. I have various receipts from the previous owners plus any items or service that took place by/for me. Also I am a retired ASE Master tech with verifiable credentials.
Included in the sale is the owners manual, factory repair manual, tool kit, misc receipts and a few small item that came with the bike when I purchased it.
As of this morning there are 5825 miles on it and I may add another dozen or so miles as a goodbye ride/final checkout before passing it along.
There is a large and dedicated group of forums and clubs worldwide that support these iconic machines so expert advise, camaraderie and enthusiasm is always just a mouse click or phone call away.
I am a long time eBay seller (20 years) and have sold several classic motorcycles, cars and special interest items over the years. That said you can expect and will receive your transaction satisfied with the utmost care, attention to detail, communication and professionalism.
